Abstract:
The time series station Nney_W_2 is located in the west of the German island of Norderney in the southern Wadden Sea. The station was sampled from January 1999 to December 2019 once a week during high tide from a land-based location close to the harbour. Water samples were obtained as a bucket sample from the surface (0 - 0.5 m depth). Each sample was mixed from three scooping processes in one 5-liter canister and subsamples were fixed with Lugol’s iodine solution for phytoplankton analysis. Phytoplankton samples were analyzed for taxonomic composition, species-specific abundance and the estimation of biovolume using an inverted microscope according to Utermöhl (1958). Phytoplankton abundance per species was determined as cells per liter. From 2005 onwards, also biomass was estimated based on measurements on cell volume. For each taxon, size and geometry of a representative number of cells were determined to estimate the biovolume of each phytoplankton taxa in a sample. Average cell volume per taxon was then multiplied by abundance to obtain biovolume (taxon-specific and total biovolume, mm3 m-3). The biovolume of phytoplankton species was determined according to the procedure standardized by the European Committee for Standardization for “Guidance on the estimation of phytoplankton biovolume”, which has been published in all European Union member states as a standard document (in Germany as DIN EN 16695:2015-12, https://doi.org/10.31030/2303923). All volumes are on a per-cell basis, that is, for chain-forming species the volumes of single cells in the chains are measured.
